An independent End-of-tranche review (the review) has confirmed the National Fire Ant Eradication Program (the Program) is well-positioned to eradicate fire ants by 2032.
Commissioned under the Federal Funding Agreement for the Fire ant response plan 2023–27, the review assigned an amber rating – confirming eradication remains achievable with targeted adjustments.
The program has accepted all 19 recommendations from the review which will further strengthen governance, collaboration, transparency, and accountability. Three recommendations have already been completed.
Key recommendations include:
- further strengthening governance structures to improve decision-making
- establishing a National Stakeholder Reference Group to enhance collaboration and engagement
- applying lessons learned to refine strategies and processes.
The program is also progressing key reforms to support long-term success. The program is continuing its commitment to innovation, examining ways to deliver smarter and more efficient treatment and surveillance in new areas. The program is also finalising a new performance management framework to better measure outcomes and track progress.
This review confirmed the program is well-positioned to move into the next phase of the response plan.
