Preventing the spread of fire ants is essential for eradication, and businesses across Queensland play a vital role in protecting the state from further infestations.
In the nursery and landscaping sectors, complying with Queensland's fire ant biosecurity requirements is crucial to stopping fire ants from spreading to new areas.
Plantmark Wholesale Nurseries on the Gold Coast understands this challenge firsthand. As one of Queensland's major wholesale nurseries, the business has invested significant time and resources to ensure its operations remain compliant.
Operations Manager Jamie said staying compliant requires significant time and effort, including inspections, record-keeping, and treating potted plants before they leave the site.
'Staying compliant is demanding, but it's something we are committed to,' Jamie said.
'We are determined to help eradicate fire ants and encourage our suppliers to do the same.'
To minimise the risk of human-assisted movement, Plantmark stores potted plants using approved methods, such as undercover benching and perimeter treatments. Plants stored outdoors are either grown in potting media treated with an approved chemical or regularly drenched to meet fire ant biosecurity requirements.
