It’s time to treat fire ants: Logan community treatment day

Logan residents can take action against fire ants by registering and collecting a free yard treatment kit on Saturday 21 March at select Bunnings stores.

The Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce (FAST) is hosting a community treatment day to empower locals in the fight to control these invasive pests. By working together, the community can significantly improve efforts to suppress infestations.

In the past year, more than 19,000 households received free yard treatment kits, while residents lodged over 7,000 suspect ant reports. This strong response highlights Logan’s commitment to tackling this super pest.

Keiran Burns, Director FAST Governance and Partnerships, emphasises the vital role residents play in protecting their properties and neighbourhoods.

'By treating all properties on the same day, the community can significantly reduce fire ant colonies and limit their spread.

'Fire ants can remain underground for up to 6 months. Colonies often go unnoticed until they are well established. If residents do not treat them, fire ants spread quickly and threaten homes, pets, animals and parks.

'Coordinated action remains one of the most effective tools to prevent infestations taking hold.'

FAST asks residents to check their yards regularly, report suspect fire ants or nests and take part in community treatment days. Last April, more than 1,250 residents join the coordinated effort to stop fire ants.

When the community acts together, it protects homes, families, and the wider Logan area.
