Australia’s fight against fire ants reached a significant milestone with the launch of the National Stakeholder Reference Group (NSRG). The group recently convened its inaugural meeting at our program’s Berrinba Headquarters, uniting leaders from across government, industry, community, research, and innovation sectors.
The NSRG is advisory in nature and aims to strengthen collaboration and coordination in the national effort to eradicate fire ants, one of Australia’s most pressing biosecurity threats.
Delegates engaged in strategic discussions, toured our headquarters, and observed demonstrations of cutting-edge eradication tools, including:
- odour detection dogs
- drones
- advanced scientific initiatives.
Sean Kelly, our Director of Special Operations, emphasised the importance of the group’s establishment.
‘The launch of this national group is a game-changer in our mission to eradicate fire ants,’ he said.
‘This group unites leaders from diverse sectors to focus on practical solutions, share expertise, and drive innovation in our eradication efforts.’
The NSRG was formed in response to recommendations from the End-of-tranche review and builds on insights from a successful 2025 forum with executive-level industry stakeholders. Both identified the need for a more consistent and collaborative approach to tackling fire ants.
‘These invasive pests pose a serious threat to our health, environment, economy, and outdoor way of life,’ Sean said.
‘The NSRG provides a platform for stakeholders to share insights, address challenges, and ensure a unified national approach to eradication.’
Delegates expressed optimism about the group’s potential to drive meaningful progress. Participants explored strategic priorities and identified opportunities to enhance collaboration, with a shared commitment to protecting Australia’s future from the devastating impacts of fire ants.
Sean highlighted the program’s commitment to continue working closely with stakeholders to stay ahead of the biosecurity threat.
‘We look forward to collaborating together to ensure we remain proactive and effective in our efforts,’ he said.
