Scenic Rim primary producer Darryn has been battling fire ants for years. The infestation has forced him to halt hay transport between his properties and take extra precautions, such as cleaning machinery to prevent the spread of these invasive pests.
Unfortunately, many primary producers across South East Queensland face similar challenges. Fire ants can destroy crops, harm livestock, and damage equipment. Left unchecked and untreated, they could reduce agricultural output by up to 40% and cause annual losses of $381 million.
In collaboration with the Queensland Government’s Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce (FAST), we are working closely with primary producers to manage fire ant infestations and safeguard Queensland’s agriculture.
Darryn says working with FAST and the National Fire Ant Eradication Program is essential, as the productivity of his land underpins his livelihood.
'Recently we have had 2 treatments, and I have noticed a real decline in live nests,' he said.
'We need to keep this work going to achieve a good result for everyone.'
