Free fire ant treatment drives strong community action

More than 600 residents across our Brisbane’s southern suburbs and the Redlands have registered and collected yard treatment kits at recent community treatment days. This brings total self-treatment registrations to more than 11,200 across the 2 regions.

In February and March, the Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce (FAST) hosted these days at Bunnings stores in Acacia Ridge, Capalaba, Mount Gravatt, Oxley, and Victoria Point.

Over 2 weekends, residents saw live fire ants, asked questions, and learned how to treat their properties for fire ants.

Many said they had already seen fire ant activity in their yards and neighbourhoods, and wanted to act immediately.

‘We’ve had someone bitten before, so being able to treat our yard helps us feel safer.’ Bunnings Acacia Ridge customer

‘It’s great I can pick up free fire ant treatment locally.’
Bunnings Oxley customer

‘I didn’t know fire ants were still a problem nor that they’re in our area. Now I know what I’m looking for, I’ll keep an eye out when I’m walking the dog.’
Bunnings Mount Gravatt customer

‘These are the ants in my vegie patch. I’ve been stung before and didn’t know what it was, but it was really itchy and blistered just like in this photo.’
Bunnings Capalaba customer

‘We have them at school and sometimes can’t play on the oval. They look like normal ants, but they really hurt.’

These community treatment days raise awareness, improve access to treatment, and help residents protect their properties until fire ant eradication treatment reaches their area.

Residents in Logan, Ipswich, the Redlands and selected suburbs in Brisbane and Gold Coast are also eligible for free yard treatment kits.

Eradicating fire ants is a shared responsibility.
