Residents and businesses in Moogerah, in the Scenic Rim region, are urged to stay alert for fire ants after a recent detection in the area.
A vigilant resident, located in our surveillance area, reported suspect fire ants to us on 3 November 2025.
The next day, our eradication officers inspected the site, destroyed the nest using liquid insecticide, and applied fire ant eradication treatment to the surrounding area. That afternoon, our scientists confirmed the ants as fire ants.
Fire ant detections within our surveillance area do happen from time to time, and we manage them using established procedures.
We will carry out intensive treatment and surveillance up to 500 m from the detection to protect the area and ensure no fire ants remain.
We will also conduct compliance checks and trace materials that can carry fire ants in Moogerah and the surrounding areas to help determine whether human-assisted movement is the source of the ants.
Eradicating fire ants requires a whole-of-community effort. Everyone in Moogerah and the surrounding areas is urged to:
- learn how to identify fire ants and nests
- check their property and local area for fire ants
- report their findings online or call 132 ANT (13 22 68)—suspect ant reports should be made within 24 hours
- allow our teams access to properties to carry out eradication activities
- take steps to prevent the spread of this invasive pest.
