Residents and businesses in Dundas in the Somerset region should stay alert for fire ants following a recent detection in the area.
On 26 August, National Fire Ant Eradication Program (the program) field officers discovered 2 fire ant nests on a property while conducting planned surveillance activities.
The nests were destroyed and eradication treatment and surveillance activities have begun to safeguard the area and ensure no fire ants remain.
Compliance checks and genetic testing are being conducted to determine the source of the ants.
Residents and business owners in Dundas and surrounding areas should:
- regularly check their properties and local area for fire ants and nests
- report their findings online or by calling 132 ANT (13 22 68) – even if fire ants are not present
- allow eradication officers access to properties to conduct eradication activities
- take steps to prevent the spread of this invasive pest.
Quotes to be attributed to Robert Wilson, Senior Director, Operations, National Fire Ant Eradication Program
'This detection is a timely reminder of why our surveillance activities are so important in containing fire ants and supporting our goal of eradication.
'Surveillance enables us to identify and respond to detections early, particularly along the edge of South East Queensland’s infestation.
'Residents play a critical role in this effort. By allowing our authorised officers access to their properties for eradication activities, residents are helping us protect local communities, industries and the environment from this invasive pest.'
