Recent fire ant detections have led to changes to Queensland’s fire ant biosecurity zones.
Effective from 15 August 2025, the updated zones affect communities in the following local government areas:
- City of Gold Coast
- Isaac Regional (Moranbah mine site only)
- Lockyer Valley Regional
- City of Moreton Bay
- Scenic Rim Regional.
Fire ant biosecurity zones and associated movement controls are precautionary measures designed to help stop fire ants from spreading across Queensland and beyond. We review and update these zones monthly based on new detections and the risk of spread.
Moving fire ants – whether they mean to or not – threatens national eradication efforts and increases the risk of new infestations. Anyone handling or transporting equipment or materials that can carry fire ants within these zones must comply with all biosecurity requirements.
What you should do
Businesses:
- check zones monthly for updates
- follow movement controls
- use fire ant-safe practices
- clean equipment and machinery before moving it offsite.
Residents:
- ensure materials purchased from these zones are processed, treated, and stored using fire ant-safe practices.
If you see suspect ants or nests, report online or call 132 ANT (13 22 68) within 24 hours.
Eradicating fire ants is a national priority to protect Australia from their devastating impacts.
