Why it's important to treat your own property

Find out if you should treat your property for fire ants, the benefits of self-treatment and which option is best for you.

Who can self-treat fire ants

Self-treating is recommended if you are in select areas of South East Queensland, even if you haven't seen fire ants on your property.

Once we start treating your area for fire ants, you will no longer need to treat your property.

If you are outside the self-treatment area

Treating your own property is not recommended for anyone outside of the select area.

Instead, check your yard for fire ants and report any sightings.

Benefits of treating your own property

Self-treatment gives you the flexibility to manage fire ants in a way that is:

  • convenient—organise treatment at a time that suits your schedule
  • cost-effective—some options are free of charge.

By treating your property, you'll reduce the number of local fire ant infestations and slow their spread to new areas.

Self-treatment options

There are 3 ways to treat your property:

  • get free treatment products from us
  • hire a licensed pest control provider
  • buy your own treatment products.

Whichever method you choose, you must report fire ants if you have them.

Free treatment products from us

We have 2 types of treatment kits:

  • nest treatment
  • proactive yard (or broadscale) treatment.

Both types of treatment are safe when used as directed.

Nest treatment kits are used around fire ant nests to help treat active infestations on your property. To receive a free kit from us, your first step is to make a report. If self-treating a fire ant nest is not practical for you, let us know when you report.

Proactive yard or broadscale treatment is used to target hidden fire ants and nests on your property. Register your interest in a free yard treatment kit.
