Why use a self-treatment kit
Using a self-treatment kit is a convenient way to manage fire ants yourself.
The products we send to you are:
- safe—all our treatment is APVMA approved and safe to use in Australia
- convenient—our kits are delivered directly to your address
- simple to use—both kits come in a shaker for easy application.
Which kit is right for you
The best kit for you depends on your situation. To treat:
- visible fire ants and nests, we recommend a nest kit
- any hidden nests, we recommend proactively using a broadscale yard kit.
Both kits are funded by the Queensland Government and are provided at no cost to you.

Nest treatment
The nest treatment product contains a fast-acting insecticide.
The product works by attracting worker ants, who carry the bait around the colony. The active ingredient affects the brood, larvae, workers and queen.
Fast-acting insecticides eliminate ants quickly, with nests dying out within 1 to 4 weeks.
How to get your kit
Depending on your situation, we will provide a nest kit or a different type of treatment. This will be discussed with you after you make a report.
What you receive
All nest self-treatment kits include:
- a shaker of either Rifaway or Advion
- instructions for safe use.
The amount of product we send is based on the number of nests you report.
We aim to send it out to you within 1 week of your report.
Always follow the product label and safety instructions and use as directed. For additional guidance, read our self-treatment safety advice.
Broadscale yard treatment
The broadscale yard treatment product contains an insect growth regulator (IGR). The IGR prevents the queen from reproducing viable offspring.
Without new worker ants, the colony starves and will die out naturally, usually within 2 to 3 months.
